Tom Cunningham Orchestra

Hear for yourself why Frankie Manning, one of the original Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers and an icon to the Swing World, calls the Tom Cunningham Orchestra “the Swingin’est Band in the Land!” There will be a special appearance by dance legend Jean Veloz, of "Groovie Movie" fame. The 16-piece orchestra’s Spanish Ballroom dances are a Washington institution going back to 1983, and celebrated on TV, radio, in newspapers and books. Adding to the Orchestra’s luster is a fabulous troupe of vocalists who re-create the boy and girl singers, the “sisters” trios, and larger vocal groups of The Swing Era. So take a tip from The Washington Post’s Mike Joyce: “The Cunningham Band is bound to please.”

Beginning swing lesson at 8 p.m. is followed by the band from 9 p.m. to midnight.

With its trademark rubboard percussion, electric guitars and R&B influences, zydeco is distinct from the fiddle-driven music of neighboring Cajuns.

In the hands of a dedicated musician and songwriter such as Nathan Williams, zydeco is one of the most expressive sounds in roots music. Nathan's down-home parables are delivered with surprising musical turns and a distinctive Caribbean lilt that reaches back to the very beginnings of Creole culture in Louisiana.

Admission includes an introductory Zydeco dance lesson with Michael and Sharon at 8 pm followed by dancing from 9 pm - Midnight to fabulous live music.

Tom Cunningham Orchestra

Hear for yourself why Frankie Manning, one of the original Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers and an icon to the Swing World, calls the Tom Cunningham Orchestra “the Swingin’est Band in the Land!” The 16-piece orchestra’s Spanish Ballroom dances are a Washington institution going back to 1983, and celebrated on TV and radio, in newspapers and books. Adding to the Orchestra’s luster is a fabulous troupe of vocalists who re-create the boy and girl singers, the “sisters” trios, and larger vocal groups of The Swing Era. So take a tip from The Washington Post’s Mike Joyce, “The Cunningham Band is bound to please.”

Beginning swing lesson at 8 p.m. is followed by the band from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Dancing by the Bayou

Dancing by the Bayou presents a Zydeco dance with great live music by Leroy Thomas & the Zydeco Road Runners. Leroy Thomas was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana and raised in Elton Louisiana. He comes from a family of zydeco musicians. His father Leo "The Bull" Thomas is the only zydeco musician to lead a zydeco band from the drums. Leroy's father has a distinct method of drumming that inspired not only his sons, but is still emulated by many zydeco bands today. Other family related zydeco musicians are Keith Frank, a second cousin on his mother's side, Geno Delafose, a second cousin on his father's side, and Brian Terry a cousin on his father's side.

In 1998 Leroy decided it was time to form his own band, "Leroy Thomas & the Zydeco Roadrunners." Today Leroy and his band have performed in over 33 states and overseas and have released eight CDs. Leroy favors what he calls "Old School Zydeco." He likes keeping the tradition of Louisiana alive and flowing. He throws in his own flavor but always comes back to original zydeco, the real deal.

Admission includes an introductory Zydeco dance lesson at 3 pm followed by dancing from 3:30 - 6 pm to music by Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco RoadRunners in the Bumper Car Pavilion.

Dancing by the Bayou

Dancing by the Bayou presents a “Mothers Day” Zydeco dance along with great live music by T-Broussard & The Zydeco Steppers. Bryant Keith "T" Broussard's fate as a Zydeco musician was sealed long before he was born. He is a descendent of Creole and zydeco music icons. His mother, Mary Jane Ardoin, stands alone as a female who has mastered the idiom of the traditional Creole accordion, a talent that was undoubtedly transcended from her uncle Bois Sec Ardoin, Creole music pioneer, her uncle Carlton Frank, world-known Creole violinist, and many others in the profession.

Bryant recalls childhood memories of playing drums or scrub board while his mother performed for audiences at local dances. It was not until 1993, at the age of 21, that he began to take his talents seriously and established his own band. Since then he has worked with unwavering ambition to achieve excellence in his destined career.

Bryant's stage presence exudes a remarkable energy. Accordionist, singer, and songwriter are among several of Bryant's musical talents. He also plays drums, scrub board, and bass guitar. Although zydeco music is Bryant's primary performance style, he also plays traditional Creole music.

Admission includes an introductory Zydeco lesson with Michael and Sharon from 3 - 3:30 pm followed by dancing until 6 pm.

Capital Blues

Capital Blues kicks off their Red Hot Blues & BBQ Blues Exchange! The weekend features two blues dances at Glen Echo Park on Friday, July 17 and Sunday, July 19.

On this Friday night Capital Blues is excited to feature solo artist Eli Cook, a young finger-pickin' slide-wielding master of the guitar with a penetrating voice beyond his years. He grew grew up on the blues: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, the Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Mississippi John Hurt. He first picked up the guitar when he was fourteen, and began his own performance career playing vintage blues, gospel shows, and revivals in Nelson County, Virginia when he was fifteen. Eli was called a 'blues phenomenon' by reviewers in near-by Charlottesville: "Featuring fast-fingered guitar and a powerful voice beyond his years, Cook doesn't need any Robert-Johnson-style pact with the devil to take him to the top." Check out his web site for music clips, and more information!

No partner required. Blues lesson from 8 - 9 pm is included in the admission. The dance runs from 9 pm - midnight.

Dancing by the Bayou

Dancing by the Bayou presents a Cajun dance featuring live music by Magnolia Cajun Band.

Since 1989, Magnolia has been New England's hometown Cajun band. Learning their music from Louisiana's finest has earned them a solid reputation at home and recognition in the Cajun heartland. Their dance lessons and music have helped build a strong sense of community at festivals and fais-do-dos all over the Northeast. Their monthly Saturday night dance has been New England's hottest ticket for more than fifteen years!

Tom Cunningham Orchestra

Hear for yourself why Frankie Manning, one of the original Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers and an icon to the Swing World, called the Tom Cunningham Orchestra “the Swingin’est Band in the Land!” The 16-piece orchestra’s Spanish Ballroom dances are a Washington institution going back to 1983, and celebrated on TV and radio, in newspapers and books.
