The Glen Echo Park Partnership presents a Blues Dance with incredible, live music by Big Boy Little featuring musicians Bret Littlehales (Big Boy Little), harmonica, vocals; Matt Kelley, guitar, vocals; Robby Leebrick, drums; and Wolf Crescenze, bass. The band recently made the 'Top 11' Finals at the Int'l Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN and also won the coveted Albert King Award for Top Guitarist! They recently finished recording 8 original songs at the Sirius XM Radio recording studio, soon to be heard on the "Bluesville" XM Radio program! "These guys play blues for grown-ups," says Bill Kirchen.

Bobby Radcliff, renowned blues guitarist, gives this account: "Back in 1967, Bret Littlehales (aka 'Big Boy Little') was THE harmonica man! He not only played like a demon, but knew more about blues music than anybody else. He was a major influence on shaping the Washington blues scene back then and he's still playing the real 100%, low down & dirty blues to this day."

Visit Big Boy's new website, enjoy the clips/videos, and you'll agree with Huey Lewis of The News, "This guy's a real blues player."

The evening begins with an optional, 90-minute Blues workshop from 7 to 8:30 pm with instructors Mike Marcotte and Donna Barker. The Washington Swing Dance Committee is celebrating its 25th anniversary with The Paul Tillotson Trio, and gifts! We met Paul at Frankie Manning’s 95th Birthday Celebration in NYC last year and couldn’t wait to get him here for our own Anniversary Celebration! Paul Tillotson says “my mission is to play great improvised music, deeply touching the souls of audiences around the world, spreading the joy that is created while creating music that comes from love.” When he performs live, the audience experiences his pleasure of sharing his music with them. The Boise Weekly has this to say: “Tillotson leers over the ivories like a horny teenager. He dances, he prances, he makes funny faces, he laughs and howls and sticks out his tongue. He squeezes and tweaks the audience like a balloon animal and in return, they do anything he asks. They compete in sing-alongs like toddlers at a Barney matinee. They make monkey grunts and they screech like parrots." Get ready for a fun ride! Band website: http://www.paultillotson.com/

Tom Cunningham Orchestra

Hear for yourself why Frankie Manning, one of the original Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers and an icon to the Swing World, called the Tom Cunningham Orchestra “the Swingin’est Band in the Land!” The 16-piece orchestra’s Spanish Ballroom dances are a Washington institution going back to 1983, and celebrated on TV and radio, in newspapers and books. Adding to the Orchestra’s luster is a fabulous troupe of vocalists who re-create the boy and girl singers, the “sisters” trios, and larger vocal groups of The Swing Era. So take a tip from The Washington Post’s Mike Joyce, “The Cunningham Band is bound to please.”

Beginning swing lesson at 8 p.m. is followed by the band from 9 p.m. to midnight.

American Swing presents a swing dance with Deanna Bogart. A beginning Swing dance lesson from 8 - 9 p.m. is followed by dancing from 9 p.m. - Midnight.

Down Beat magazine describes Deanna Bogart as "an extravagant entertainer"-- and entertain is what Bogart does best. The Maryland-based blues and boogie pianist and saxophonist combines the energy of 1930's style boogie piano blues with contemporary blues sounds emanating from places like New Orleans, Chicago and Memphis. "The goal when we play live," says Bogart, "is to create a fusion of all these different musical styles with the blues and boogie genuinely at the core." The Washington Post may have best described Deanna Bogart with three words: luster, sophistication, and soul. This is a one-of-a-kind artist, whose music veers from the depths of the blues to the playful heights of swing, from the subtleties of jazz to the hard-won grit of soul. Tom and Debra are delighted to welcome this long-time friend of the swing community back to Glen Echo.

With Peter at the helm, "Lindy Hop Heaven" has become one of the nation's most requested swing dance bands. The band features Peter on clarinet, alto sax, piano and vocals, the renowned George Reed on drums, Peter Ecklund on trumpet, Dave Davies on trombone, guitar and vocals, Tom Mitchell on guitar and vocals and Harry Aceto on bass. They play swing dances, festivals and music and dance camps nationwide, and are heard annually at Swing Out New Hampshire, Beantown Lindy Hop Summer Camp and Western and Swing Week at Ashokan. "Lindy Hop Heaven" also plays regularly at swing dances up and down the east coast and around the country. Known as a "dancer's band," they've learned to play the tempos, riffs and rhythms that are most desired by dancers of Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, Jitterbug, Shag, West Coast Swing and more. Dancers frequently come up to them after a tune and say, "How did you know how to play exactly what we were dancing?" Band website: http://peterdavis.biz
